Basílica de Sant Miquel

Located just steps from Plaça d’Espanya, the Basílica de Sant Miquel is one of Palma’s oldest Christian churches and a striking example of Baroque religious architecture in Mallorca. Dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, this church is not only a place of worship but also a key part of the city’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

From Mosque to Basilica

The site of the Basílica de Sant Miquel was originally occupied by a mosque during the Islamic period. Following the Christian conquest of 1229, it became one of Palma’s first parish churches. The current Baroque structure was completed in the 17th century, featuring an elaborate façade adorned with sculptural details and a prominent statue of Saint Michael triumphing over a dragon.

Interior Highlights

Inside, the basilica is richly decorated with ornate altarpieces, gilded columns, and religious paintings. The high altar is particularly impressive, framed by twisted Solomonic columns and a detailed carving of Saint Michael. Several side chapels house revered religious images, including the Virgen de la Salut, patroness of Palma.

The vaulted ceilings, stained glass, and ambient lighting create a solemn yet welcoming atmosphere for visitors and parishioners alike.

A Living Part of Palma’s Faith

Basílica de Sant Miquel remains an active parish church, holding daily Mass and special celebrations throughout the year. Its central location makes it a convenient stop while exploring nearby attractions such as Mercat de l’Olivar and Plaça Major, and its impressive façade is a favourite for photographers.
