Unique History & Landscape

Cala es Conills is a small rocky cove surrounded by sandstone cliffs (marès), reflecting its historical role as a former sandstone quarry. Many scientists believe that blocks quarried here were used in the construction of nearby El Castell, part of the area's defensive system. In 1394, King Jaume II sought to fortify this coastline after pirate attacks threatened the original Sant Elm oratory and hospital (built in 1279), dedicated to the patron saint of navigators.

The shoreline features pebbles, gravel, and scattered boat sheds (escars), adding to its authentic Mallorcan character. A few small beached boats are often visible along the shore.

Boating & Anchoring

Anchoring conditions are challenging here. Strong westerly winds make the cove dangerous for boats, and submerged rocks sit just 50 metres from the shore at 2 metres deep, complicating entry and disembarkation. At 100 metres offshore, depths reach 6 metres, but extreme care is required. The nearest port facilities are at Port d’Andratx, approximately 3.4 nautical miles away.

Access & Popularity

Access is simple by car, following clear signs to Cala Conills, where free parking is available in the surrounding streets. Public transport also serves the area, with a bus stop located about 500 metres away. Due to its more rugged setting and difficult anchorage, Cala es Conills remains quiet and lightly visited, mostly attracting local residents and occasional visitors seeking a peaceful spot off the beaten path.
