Can Balaguer

Located on Carrer de la Unió, the Casal Balaguer — commonly known as Can Balaguer — is a 17th-century aristocratic mansion that has been transformed into a public cultural space. Meticulously restored, it offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into Palma’s noble past, blending Baroque architecture with modern exhibition spaces.

From Noble Residence to Cultural House

Can Balaguer was originally built in the late 1600s for the wealthy Balaguer family and later became home to prominent figures in Mallorcan society. The restoration project, completed in 2016, preserved the building’s original grandeur while adapting it for exhibitions, concerts, and cultural events.

Today, it functions as both a museum of historic interiors and a gallery for contemporary art, making it a unique blend of old and new.

Architectural Highlights

Visitors enter through a grand arched doorway into a central courtyard framed by elegant stone columns and balconies. Inside, rooms are furnished to reflect the aristocratic lifestyle of Palma’s elite, complete with period furniture, paintings, and decorative arts.

The upper floors host temporary exhibitions covering a range of artistic disciplines, while the beautifully restored Saló Principal retains its coffered ceilings and rich woodwork.

A Cultural Stop in the City Centre

Just steps from Passeig del Born and La Rambla, Can Balaguer is an ideal addition to a walking tour of Palma’s historic core. Entry is usually free or low-cost, and guided tours are sometimes available.
