Rugged Setting & Historical Significance
Es Canons, also known as Sa Banyera dels Ermitans or Es Maresos, is part of the protected Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès Muntanyes d'Artà, lying beneath the Ermita de Betlem (300 metres) and Sa Coassa (321 metres). The name Es Canons comes from the nearby forest and remnants of coastal artillery installations once stationed here.
The coastline features a distinctly irregular and steep profile, shaped by millions of years of marine erosion. The surrounding cliffs and fossil dunes give the area its distinctive appearance, while scrubland and low bush vegetation dominate the inland terrain.
Nearby Features & Archaeology
This stretch of coast includes two prominent inlets: S’Aigo Dolça – Sa Ferradura and Sa Banyera dels Ermitans – Es Maresos. Close by sits the Megalithic Tomb of S’Aigo Dolça, one of the oldest known architectural sites on Mallorca, adding considerable archaeological interest to the area.
Boating & Anchoring
Anchoring directly in front of Es Canons is not recommended due to the shallow, rocky seabed, numerous submerged stones, and dense patches of seaweed. Only small boats with shallow draughts occasionally venture into these waters. The nearest port facilities are at Port Colònia de Sant Pere.
Access & Popularity
Access is possible by car following signs toward Betlem, with free parking available near the village. From there, visitors complete the approach on foot. Due to its remote, rugged setting and lack of facilities, Es Canons remains extremely quiet and lightly visited, primarily attracting locals, hikers, and nature enthusiasts seeking solitude and raw coastal scenery.
