Casa Museu Pare Ginard

The House Where Mallorca’s Stories Live On

A Guardian of the Spoken Word

Tucked away on a quiet street in Sant Joan, the Casa Museu Pare Ginard invites visitors into the birthplace of Rafel Ginard Bauçà (1899–1976) — priest, folklorist, and one of Mallorca’s most important collectors of oral tradition. This 19th-century peasant home has been lovingly preserved to reflect the rural life of its time, while also serving as a gateway to the island’s intangible heritage.

Inside the Museu de la Paraula

Rather than filling its rooms with static displays, the Museum of the Word brings Ginard’s life’s work to life through sound. Visitors can listen to “gloses” (folk verses), romances, and witty sayings recorded from Mallorca’s villages, immersing themselves in the language and cadence of the past. Exhibits explain the role of oral storytelling in passing down history, values, and humour, giving you a deeper appreciation for a culture built on shared memory.

Life in a Rural Home

The building itself tells its own story. Stepping into the kitchen, courtyard, and work areas, you’ll find original features such as a pigsty, bread oven, water basin, and traces of a mill — everyday tools of self-sufficient living. These physical reminders of rural Mallorca form a powerful backdrop to the words and voices preserved inside, showing how the land, the home, and the culture were inseparably linked.

Keeping Tradition Alive

Today, the museum is more than a place of preservation — it’s a living cultural centre. The upper floor serves as a venue for exhibitions, readings, workshops, and community events, ensuring that Ginard’s mission continues into the modern day. For visitors, it offers not only a look back at Mallorca’s past, but also a reminder that its traditions still have a voice in the present.
