Castell de Bellver
Rising above the city on a wooded hilltop to the west of Palma, the Castell de Bellver is one of the most striking and unique castles in Spain — and the only one in the country with a circular floor plan. With its panoramic views, fascinating history, and well-curated museum, it’s a must-visit for anyone exploring Palma beyond the Old Town.
A Unique Circular Fortress
Built in the early 14th century for King Jaume II of Mallorca, the castle was designed as a royal residence but has also served as a military fortress and prison. Its circular layout, central courtyard, and four towers make it unlike any other Gothic castle in Europe. Despite its defensive role, it retains an elegance that reflects its royal origins.
The outer terrace offers 360-degree views over the Bay of Palma, the port, the city, and the distant Tramuntana mountains — one of the best photo opportunities in Palma.
Museum and Historical Exhibits
Inside the castle is the Museu d’Història de la Ciutat, Palma’s official history museum. Spread across several chambers, it covers the island’s Roman roots, medieval development, and modern transformations through archaeological artefacts, maps, portraits, and documents.
You can explore the castle’s courtyard, dungeons, chapel, and upper terrace, giving a well-rounded insight into both its structure and its shifting roles over time.
A Peaceful Escape with Views
Castell de Bellver is surrounded by pine forest and reached via a gently winding road — perfect for walkers, joggers, or cyclists. While taxis and public buses also reach the entrance, many visitors choose to approach on foot for the full scenic experience.
