Ciutat Romana de Pol·lèntia – Discover Mallorca’s Roman Past

Step back in time with a visit to the Ciutat Romana de Pol·lèntia, the most important Roman archaeological site in Mallorca, located just outside the medieval walls of Alcúdia Old Town. Founded around 123 BCE, Pol·lèntia once stood as a thriving Roman city and was declared a Historic Site in Spain in 1946. Today, visitors can explore its remarkably preserved remains and learn more about life on the island during Roman times.

Explore the Remains of a Roman City

Covering an area of approximately 16 to 18 hectares, the site includes three main excavated areas: La Portella (a residential quarter), the Forum (civic centre), and the Roman Theatre. At La Portella, you’ll find the layout of several Roman houses including Casa dels Dos Tresors, which still retains its full floor plan, and Casa del Cap de Bronce, once home to a peristyle courtyard. You can also see remnants of ancient workshops and a 3rd-century defensive wall that overlays older residential structures.

The Forum, Pol·lèntia’s political, religious and commercial heart, features the foundations of the Capitolino Temple, dedicated to Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva. Nearby, two smaller temples and the remains of taverns offer a glimpse into everyday Roman life.

An Ancient Theatre and Archaeological Museum

One of the highlights of the site is the 1st-century Roman Theatre, where the curved rows of seating, orchestra, and fragments of the stage are still visible. The presence of a necropolis within the theatre area adds to the site's layered historical narrative. To delve deeper, visit the nearby Pollentia Monographic Museum, which houses artefacts and discoveries from the excavations.
