Edifici de La Misericòrdia

In the heart of Palma, the Edifici de La Misericòrdia stands as both a striking example of Baroque civic architecture and an active cultural centre. Originally constructed in the 17th century as a charitable institution, it has evolved into one of the city’s key venues for exhibitions, concerts, and public events.

From Charity House to Cultural Landmark

The building’s origins date back to 1677, when it was founded as a home for orphans and the poor. Over the centuries, it has undergone several renovations, yet it retains much of its historic character — from grand stone staircases to intricate façade details. Its name, “Misericòrdia,” reflects its role as a place of compassion and public service.

Cultural & Artistic Hub

Today, the Edifici de La Misericòrdia houses art galleries, an auditorium, and spaces for temporary exhibitions that range from photography and painting to history and local heritage. It’s also home to the Biblioteca de Cultura Artesana, a library dedicated to preserving and promoting Balearic arts and crafts.

The building regularly hosts cultural festivals, book fairs, and public lectures, making it a dynamic meeting place for Palma’s creative community.

A Peaceful Courtyard Oasis

One of the highlights is its central courtyard, a calm and leafy space where visitors can rest between exhibitions. The mix of stone arcades, shaded benches, and potted plants gives the building a welcoming atmosphere despite its monumental size.
