Edificio Sa Quartera

A fine example of early 20th-century civic architecture, the Edificio Sa Quartera is a historic grain warehouse turned contemporary cultural centre in central Inca. With its distinct façade and evolving role in community life, it reflects the town’s transition from agricultural commerce to modern creativity.

From Grain Store to Cultural Hub

Built in 1910, the building originally served as a grain distribution centre, playing a key role in storing and managing cereals for the local population. Its name, “Quartera,” derives from the ‘quartera’ measure — a unit of volume used for grain. The warehouse remained active until the late 20th century, when changes in commerce and agriculture led to its closure.

Instead of being demolished, it was carefully preserved and repurposed as a venue for art exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and public events — a model of adaptive reuse in Mallorca.

Architecture & Exhibition Space

Architecturally, Sa Quartera stands out for its tall arched windows, geometric cornices, and natural light — all ideal for its current role as a gallery. Inside, the space has been modernised to host rotating exhibits by local and international artists, with a focus on visual arts and cultural dialogue.

It is run by the Ajuntament d’Inca, which curates a programme of events throughout the year. During town festivals like Dijous Bo, the venue often becomes a showcase for local talent and innovation.

Address: Carrer Quartera, 6, 07300 Inca, Mallorca
