El Calvari Steps & Chapel

El Calvari Steps & Chapel

A Landmark Pilgrimage with Breathtaking Views

One of Pollença’s most famous landmarks, the El Calvari Steps offer a memorable blend of history, devotion, and panoramic scenery. This striking staircase of 365 stone steps — one for each day of the year — climbs from the town’s centre to the small Chapel of El Calvari at the summit.

Traditionally, pilgrims and townsfolk would ascend the steps as part of religious processions, particularly during Easter’s moving Via Crucis reenactment.

History & Cultural Significance

The origins of the Chapel of El Calvari date back to the 18th century, though the site has long been revered as a place of contemplation. Inside, visitors will find a simple yet evocative altar featuring a revered 14th-century wooden carving of Christ on the Cross. Over the centuries, this has become one of the most important spiritual icons in the region. The climb is lined with ancient cypress trees and small stone crosses marking the Stations of the Cross.

The Climb & Scenic Rewards

Ascending the steps is a steady, rewarding journey, with every pause offering increasingly dramatic views over Pollença’s terracotta rooftops and the Tramuntana Mountains. At the top, the open square in front of the chapel provides a perfect spot to rest, take photographs, and admire the sweeping vista across the bay. The descent offers just as much charm, allowing you to take in the architecture and vibrant life of the old town.
