Ermita de Sant Miquel – Mallorca’s Ancient Gothic Hidden in the Woods
The Ermita de Sant Miquel, also known as the Chapel of Saint Michael, is one of Mallorca’s earliest Gothic churches. It’s believed to have been built soon after the Catalan conquest (13th century), atop an earlier mosque and possibly a Paleo-Christian site. With its modest interior and quiet rural setting, it offers a moving glimpse of the island’s medieval past.
A Chapel Steeped in History
First mentioned in a papal bull in 1248, this single-nave Gothic chapel combines early Christian, Islamic, and medieval Christian heritage. It features a bell gable from the late 15th century and retains original architectural elements—including a Gothic altar painting and a 16th-century Christ statue.
Serene Setting & Rustic Appeal
Set beside the banks of Torrent de Sant Miquel, the chapel stands within a peaceful oak woodland. Surrounded by olive groves and meadows, the location is perfect for a meditative walk. Nearby, you can visit the public well or continue your exploration toward Fonts Ufanes and the Campanet Caves.
How to Visit
The chapel may not always be open inside, but visitors are welcome to explore the exterior and surroundings at any time. It's accessible via a rural track off Camí de Sant Miquel or by bus (route 333 stops nearby).
