A Windswept Landscape of Erosion and Evolution
Tucked between Punta de sa Galera and sa Roca des Caragol, Es Can Curt offers a glimpse into the wild, eroded terrain of southern Mallorca. The coastline here rises no more than two metres, flanked by ancient fossil dunes that once sheltered the now-extinct Myotragus balearicus, a goat-like ruminant unique to the Balearic Islands. Trapped by rising seas over five million years ago, this creature’s isolated evolution makes the landscape feel like a walk through natural history.
Stark Beauty and Geological Significance
The Penyalor de Can Curt and Illot Can Curt serve as natural lookouts over the sea, offering panoramic views over this barren but beautiful stretch of coast. Inland, the area forms part of the Àrea Natural d’Especial Interès Cap de ses Salines, rich in geological features and rare flora. While the land is rugged and exposed, the shallow sandy ground by the waterline lends a quiet stillness.
Anchor Nearby, Explore on Foot
Due to the uneven seabed and shallow waters, anchoring directly at Es Can Curt is not advised. Instead, visiting boats are recommended to anchor at nearby Platja des Caragol, which offers safer and more suitable conditions. For those on land, the beach is best reached by foot or vehicle, with a peaceful, low-key atmosphere appreciated by locals and nature enthusiasts alike.
