Església de la Nativitat de la Mare de Déu

Dominating the eastern edge of the village square, the Església de la Nativitat de la Mare de Déu is Fornalutx’s most prominent historic monument — a church with Gothic roots and Baroque updates that has stood watch over the town for centuries. Its bell tower is one of the first things you’ll spot as you arrive, rising above the terracotta rooftops against a dramatic mountain backdrop.

Layers of History

The church’s origins date back to the 13th century, though it has been expanded and renovated several times since. The façade, with its arched stone entrance and rose window, showcases simple yet elegant design, while the hexagonal bell tower, added in the 17th century, adds vertical drama to the skyline. Inside, the single nave features Baroque-style altars, religious artworks, and a beautifully kept stone floor.

A Spiritual & Cultural Landmark

More than just a place of worship, the church is an integral part of Fornalutx’s annual festes and religious celebrations, including Mare de Déu de la Nativitat, the town’s patron saint festival. Locals gather here for masses, processions, and musical events throughout the year — keeping faith and tradition alive in this mountain enclave.

Peaceful & Photogenic

Whether or not you step inside, the church square and surroundings are ideal for quiet moments and photography. The natural stone blends beautifully with the surrounding village buildings, and it’s common to hear the sound of the bell tolling gently through the valley.
