Església de Santa Maria la Major

Dominating the centre of Inca, the Església de Santa Maria la Major is a striking example of Baroque Mallorcan architecture with deep historical roots. With its imposing stone façade, soaring bell tower, and rich interior artworks, it stands as both a religious centre and architectural landmark in the heart of the town.

A Church with Centuries of History

Though construction of the current church began in the early 18th century, the site has hosted religious buildings since at least the 13th century, shortly after the Catalan conquest of Mallorca. The existing structure showcases classic Baroque features, including elaborate cornices, Corinthian columns, and a symmetrical rose window framed by sculptural detail.

Inside, the church is surprisingly spacious, with vaulted ceilings, side chapels, and gilded altarpieces. The highlight is the Gothic panel painting of Santa Maria, dating to 1373 — the oldest signed painting in Mallorca — preserved in one of the chapels.

Community Heart & Festive Venue

Santa Maria la Major remains an active parish church and hosts regular masses, weddings, and cultural events. It plays a central role in Inca’s festivals, especially during the Dijous Bo and Fires d’Inca celebrations, when the church square becomes the focal point of town life.

Visitors are welcome to step inside during opening hours or service times, and the square outside is a great place to take in the view or enjoy a coffee at one of the nearby cafés.
