Església de Sant Bartomeu

Dominating Montuïri’s skyline, the Església de Sant Bartomeu is a handsome parish church blending Gothic origins with later Baroque and neoclassical elements. Located at the heart of the old town, it’s both a spiritual centre and one of the village’s most recognisable landmarks.

Centuries of History

The church stands on a site with Christian worship dating back to the 13th century, shortly after the Catalan conquest of Mallorca. The current structure began to take shape in the 14th century in a Gothic style, but it underwent major enlargements and refurbishments in the 17th and 18th centuries, adding the Baroque façade and neoclassical interior touches you see today.

Inside, the church features a single wide nave with side chapels, a gilded high altar, and religious artworks that reflect centuries of local devotion. Particularly notable are the sculptures and altarpieces dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, the town’s patron saint.

Role in Local Life

Sant Bartomeu remains active as the parish church, hosting regular masses and the annual Festa de Sant Bartomeu in late August — one of Montuïri’s biggest celebrations, with religious processions, music, and community gatherings.

From the steps outside, visitors can enjoy views across the tiled rooftops of the town, making it a natural stop while exploring Montuïri’s historic centre.
