Standing at the heart of Esporles, the Church of Sant Pere is a striking Neo-Gothic landmark that anchors the village’s skyline and reflects centuries of local religious and cultural heritage.

Neo-Gothic Elegance with Baroque Roots

Although the current structure was built between 1904 and 1923, the site has long been home to a parish church dedicated to Saint Peter. The present-day church was designed by the renowned Mallorcan architect Gaspar Bennàssar i Moner, blending Gothic revival influences with traditional Mallorcan stonework. Its unfinished bell tower, large rose window, and twin doorways make for an imposing yet graceful presence on Plaça d’Espanya, directly opposite the town hall.

Inside, the church is laid out in basilica form, with a high central nave and two side aisles supported by ribbed vaults and pointed arches. Its most treasured feature is a 17th-century Baroque altarpiece, originally from the Santa Margalida convent in Palma — a richly gilded work filled with carved saints, angelic figures, and biblical detail.

Local Life & Celebrations

The church is not only an architectural highlight but also a living part of Esporles community life. Weekly services are held here, and the church plays a central role in festivals such as the Festa de Sant Pere in late June, when processions, concerts, and community celebrations fill the village. During holidays and feast days, the church is often beautifully decorated and filled with music.

Access & Visitor Info

The church is centrally located and easily reached on foot from anywhere in the village. Visitors are welcome to enter outside of mass hours, though respectful clothing and quiet behaviour are expected. The church square is also a good starting point for exploring the Passeig del Rei and surrounding cafés and shops, making it an ideal stop for a short visit or photo break.
