The Unfinished Church of Dreams
A Monument to Ambition
The Església Nova, or “New Church,” is one of the most striking landmarks in Son Servera. Construction began in 1905, designed by Joan Rubió i Bellver — a disciple of Antoni Gaudí — who brought the flowing lines and bold vision of Catalan Modernism to this quiet Mallorcan town. The project was ambitious: to build a vast Neo-Gothic church that would rival some of Mallorca’s greatest religious structures.
A Project Left Incomplete
Despite its grandeur, construction halted in 1929 due to lack of funds, leaving the church permanently unfinished. Today, the structure stands without a roof, open to the sky and the elements, its soaring stone arches and pointed windows framing views of the Serra de Llevant mountains. This unusual design gives the building an atmosphere unlike any other church on the island — both awe-inspiring and serene.
A Living Cultural Space
Rather than being abandoned, the Església Nova has found new life as a cultural venue. Its open-air nave and acoustics make it a dramatic setting for concerts, festivals, and community events, particularly the Son Servera International Music Festival held each summer. The blending of historic stonework and live performance creates an unforgettable experience for visitors.
A Must-See in Son Servera
For travellers exploring the east coast of Mallorca, the Església Nova is a highlight that captures both the ambition of the past and the creativity of the present. Whether you come to admire its architecture, enjoy a concert under the stars, or simply pause in its peaceful gardens, this unfinished church stands as a symbol of the town’s enduring spirit.
