Es Pontàs Sea Arch

Es Pontàs Sea Arch

A Natural Gateway Rising from the Sea

One of Mallorca’s Iconic Rock Formations

Off the coast of Cala Santanyí, the Es Pontàs is a dramatic natural rock arch standing tall in the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. Shaped by centuries of wind and wave erosion, its name translates to “The Big Bridge” in Mallorquín. This striking geological feature has become a symbol of the area and a must-see for visitors exploring Mallorca’s south-east coast.

A Favourite with Climbers and Photographers

Es Pontàs is world-famous among deep-water solo climbers thanks to its challenging overhanging routes, first brought to international attention by professional climber Chris Sharma. For those staying on dry land, the arch is equally impressive to photograph, especially in the soft light of sunrise or sunset when the rock glows gold against the sea.

Easy to Reach and View

A short coastal walk from Cala Santanyí leads to a dedicated viewpoint offering an unobstructed panorama of the arch. The path is easy and suitable for most visitors, making it an ideal quick excursion before or after enjoying the nearby beach. On calm days, kayakers and paddleboarders can also approach the arch from the water for a unique perspective.

Part of a Scenic Coastline

The Es Pontàs viewpoint is a highlight of the Santanyí coastline, which also features small coves, rugged cliffs, and clear blue waters. Visiting this spot offers a chance to experience the area’s natural beauty in its purest form, whether you come for the sport, the photography, or simply to admire nature’s handiwork.
