Ferrocarril de Sóller – Ride the Vintage Train Through the Tramuntana
One of Mallorca’s most beloved heritage experiences begins right in Bunyola: the Ferrocarril de Sóller, a century-old railway line that still runs with its original wooden carriages. Departing from Bunyola’s charming stone station, this vintage train offers a scenic journey through the Tramuntana mountains, making it a timeless and family-friendly adventure.
A Railway Steeped in History
The Ferrocarril de Sóller first opened in 1912, built to connect the inland town of Sóller with Palma via the mountains. Powered originally by coal and later by electricity, it was a major engineering feat for its time, using bridges, tunnels, and viaducts to cross rugged terrain. Bunyola, one of the original stations, remains largely unchanged, with a beautifully preserved building and shaded platform.
A Scenic Journey Through Mallorca’s Heartland
From Bunyola, the train climbs steadily toward Sóller, passing through 13 tunnels, across stone bridges, and alongside terraced hillsides and olive groves. The landscape is spectacular — especially in spring when orange blossoms fill the air, or autumn when golden light bathes the mountains. The ride takes around 40 minutes and is an experience in itself, whether you’re heading to Sóller for the day or simply enjoying the ride.
The wood-panelled carriages, brass fittings, and vintage lighting all add to the nostalgic charm. For many, the Bunyola-to-Sóller section is actually more scenic and peaceful than the Palma departure point, and far less crowded.
A Memorable Family-Friendly Experience
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a photographer, or travelling with kids, the Sóller train from Bunyola offers something for everyone. It’s one of the most iconic ways to experience inland Mallorca, combining heritage travel with incredible views and a relaxed, unhurried pace.
