Garden S’Hort del Rei
At the foot of Palma’s Royal Palace of La Almudaina, the S’Hort del Rei is a beautifully landscaped garden that blends Moorish heritage with modern elegance. Once part of the royal palace grounds, this historic space is now a free public park where locals and visitors come to stroll, relax, and enjoy the greenery.
A Royal Garden Reborn
Originally designed during the period of Islamic rule, the garden served as a private orchard (hort) for the palace. Over the centuries, it fell into disrepair, but was carefully restored in the 1960s to echo its medieval layout. The result is a tranquil retreat that retains an air of Andalusian charm.
Moorish Design & Mediterranean Planting
Long rectangular pools, splashing fountains, and shaded pergolas create a cooling oasis in the heart of the city. The planting includes palm trees, orange trees, roses, and seasonal blooms, all arranged in geometric beds. Sculptures and historical monuments are scattered throughout, including a striking bronze of a Majorcan slinger.
The pathways, lined with ceramic-tiled benches, offer quiet spots to sit and watch the world go by.
A Perfect Pause Between Landmarks
S’Hort del Rei is ideally located for a relaxing break while exploring the waterfront and the Old Town. It sits directly between La Seu Cathedral, the Parc de la Mar, and the Passeig del Born, making it one of the most photographed spots in Palma.
