Historic Stone Crosses of Sineu

Markers of Faith and Boundaries

Scattered around the entrances to Sineu are a series of historic stone crosses, known locally as cruces del término. These monuments, some dating back several centuries, once marked the limits of the town and acted as spiritual guardians for travellers entering or leaving the area.

Craftsmanship and Symbolism

Each cross is carved from local sandstone and mounted on a stepped base, often featuring intricate detailing on both the cross and the pedestal. They blend Gothic and later stylistic influences, reflecting the religious devotion of the community that commissioned them. Beyond their practical role as waymarkers, they were seen as symbols of blessing and protection.

Walking the Crosses Route

Today, visitors can spot these crosses at various points around the town, including roads leading in from Petra, Lloret de Vistalegre, and Llubí. A casual walking route — sometimes called the Ronda de Creus — links several of them, offering a pleasant way to explore Sineu’s outskirts while appreciating a piece of living heritage.

A Free and Accessible Attraction

The crosses are visible year-round and require no entry fee, making them an easy addition to any visit to Sineu. They also provide excellent photographic opportunities, particularly in the golden light of early morning or late afternoon.
