La Llotja (Sa Llotja)

Located near the waterfront in Palma’s old harbour district, La Llotja — also known as Sa Llotja de Palma — is a masterpiece of Gothic civil architecture and one of the most beautiful historic buildings in Mallorca. Once a bustling merchant’s exchange, today it stands as a cultural venue and an architectural jewel open to visitors.

From Trade Hub to Cultural Landmark

Built between 1420 and 1452 under the direction of master architect Guillem Sagrera, La Llotja was designed as the headquarters for Palma’s College of Merchants. In the 15th century, this was the beating heart of the city’s maritime trade, where merchants negotiated contracts, exchanged goods, and shaped the island’s economy.

The building’s construction coincided with Mallorca’s golden age of commerce, and its elegant style reflects both wealth and civic pride.

Architectural Highlights

The exterior is striking for its crenellated roofline, symmetrical windows, and ornate main portal guarded by carved angels. Inside, the space opens into a single large hall supported by six slender, twisting columns that rise like palm trees to meet the vaulted ceiling. The sense of lightness and symmetry makes the hall as impressive today as it was in the 15th century.

Above the main entrance, the figure of Archangel Gabriel serves as both protector and emblem of commerce.

A Space for Art and Culture

While no longer used for trade, La Llotja regularly hosts art exhibitions, cultural events, and special displays, making each visit a little different. Entry is often free, allowing both residents and tourists to appreciate its architectural beauty up close.

Its location — just steps from the Passeig Sagrera and the marina — makes it an easy and rewarding stop during a walking tour of Palma’s seafront.
