La Porciúncula – The Crystal Church

La Porciúncula, often called the “Crystal Church”, is one of Palma’s most distinctive modern religious buildings. Completed in 1968, it was designed by architect Guillermo Casas in collaboration with stained-glass artist Juan Bautista Castro. Its unique circular form and spectacular 360-degree stained-glass windows make it a masterpiece of contemporary ecclesiastical architecture.

Architecture & Design

The church’s nickname comes from the way its immense stained-glass walls flood the interior with multicoloured light, creating a serene yet vibrant atmosphere. The glasswork depicts biblical scenes, nature motifs, and abstract designs, all rendered in vivid detail. The combination of traditional Franciscan spirituality with innovative modernist design makes it unlike any other church in Mallorca.

Museum & Exhibitions

Alongside the main sanctuary, La Porciúncula houses a small archaeological and ethnographic museum, displaying artefacts from private collections, including prehistoric tools, Roman pottery, and religious relics. Visitors can also explore an exhibition on the history of the Franciscan order in Mallorca.

Visitor Experience

Set away from the bustling Old Town in the Platja de Palma district, La Porciúncula offers a peaceful cultural stop close to the beach. It’s especially impressive in the late afternoon when the sunlight intensifies the stained-glass glow. Photography is welcomed, and guided tours are available for groups.
