La Seu – Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma

Towering above Palma’s seafront, La Seu is not just the island’s most recognisable landmark — it’s one of the most spectacular Gothic cathedrals in Europe. Known for its golden sandstone glow, enormous rose window, and waterside setting, it dominates the skyline and offers visitors a powerful combination of art, architecture, and spiritual history. A visit here is an essential experience for anyone exploring Mallorca’s capital.

History and Architecture

Construction began in 1229, shortly after the Christian conquest of Mallorca, and continued for nearly 400 years. The result is a masterpiece of Catalan Gothic architecture, with elements of Renaissance and Baroque added over time. In the early 20th century, the famed architect Antoni Gaudí contributed to interior renovations, including the moving of the choir stalls and the addition of a striking wrought-iron canopy over the altar.

The cathedral’s central nave rises to a height of 44 metres, making it one of the tallest Gothic structures in the world. Its rose window — a spectacular 13-metre wide circle of coloured glass — floods the space with natural light and is considered one of the largest in existence.

Interior Highlights

Inside, visitors can admire a stunning blend of traditional religious art and modern interventions. One of the most notable contemporary additions is a ceramic installation by Miquel Barceló, located in the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament — a striking, organic interpretation of the sea and the Last Supper.

Visitors can also access the terraces and bell towers, offering sweeping views over Palma’s rooftops, the harbour, and the Tramuntana mountains.

Visiting Experience

Whether you're drawn by faith, architecture, or photography, La Seu offers an unforgettable experience. Audio guides and informative panels help bring the centuries of history to life. The Parc de la Mar just in front of the cathedral is a perfect place to take in its full splendour and reflect on the scale of the building from below.
