Es Firó – Sóller’s Moors & Christians Festival
Dates: Second Monday in May
Where: Port de Sóller & Sóller town
Perhaps the most dramatic of all Mallorca’s fiestas, Es Firó in Sóller commemorates the town’s legendary victory against invading Ottoman pirates in 1561. Held every year on the second Monday of May, this spectacular re-enactment transforms the normally peaceful streets and beaches into a stage for battle. Locals dress up as either Christian townsfolk or Moorish pirates, filling the air with the sound of musket fire, drums, and battle cries.
The day begins with a solemn mass and parades through Sóller, but by afternoon the action moves to Port de Sóller, where the pirates land on the beach and are met by villagers defending their town. The mock battles continue through the streets, ending with a dramatic final clash in Plaça Constitució. Throughout, there’s singing, drinking, and plenty of laughter, with the whole town joining in. For visitors, Es Firó is not just a historical pageant but an electrifying cultural experience, offering colour, theatre, and Mallorcan pride at its most passionate.
Capdepera Medieval Fair
Dates: Third weekend in May
Where: Capdepera Castle and town centre
In the charming hilltop town of Capdepera, May brings one of Mallorca’s most enchanting festivals: the Medieval Fair. Held over three days in and around the 14th-century castle, this event recreates the atmosphere of the Middle Ages with a mix of tradition, performance, and entertainment. Streets are decorated with banners and stalls, while artisans demonstrate crafts such as blacksmithing, weaving, and pottery. Visitors can browse handmade goods, local delicacies, and medieval-inspired foods, or watch falconry shows and street theatre.
The highlight is the way the entire town embraces the festival spirit: locals dress in period costume, wandering minstrels play music in the streets, and storytellers captivate children. At night, the castle walls are lit with torches, adding to the magical ambience. For tourists, the Capdepera Medieval Fair is one of the most family-friendly and photogenic events of the year, blending history with fun and offering a unique way to step back in time while enjoying Mallorca’s spring sunshine.
