Medieval Tower / Old Town Hall

Stone Watchtower Turned Civic Landmark Preserving Centuries of Village History

Just steps from the main square, Fornalutx’s Medieval Tower, now functioning as the Ajuntament (Town Hall), stands as a striking symbol of the village’s fortified past. With its stone walls, arched windows, and watchtower-like silhouette, it’s one of the most historically significant civic buildings in the area.

From Watchtower to Civic Centre

Originally built as a defensive tower during the late Middle Ages, this structure once served as a lookout post to protect the valley from pirate raids. Over the centuries, it was gradually integrated into a larger building that now houses the town’s administrative offices — but its fortified essence remains.

Architectural Detail

You’ll notice the small, deep-set windows, thick walls, and the subtly tapered shape that helped it function as a lookout. Though it’s not open for tours, the building’s façade is well maintained and clearly marked, and it forms part of the architectural harmony of the town’s historic centre.

Still a Community Hub

While it’s no longer a place for defense, the building plays a vital role in village life. Locals gather on its steps during fiestas and processions, and official notices are still posted on its bulletin board — a small reminder that in Fornalutx, tradition and modern life are closely intertwined.
