Fire, Devils & Tradition – Inside Sa Pobla’s Sant Antoni Museum

Celebrating the Town’s Most Famous Festival

In Sa Pobla, January means one thing – Sant Antoni. Every year on the 16th and 17th, the streets erupt with bonfires, dancing, music, and the mischievous presence of the Dimonis (devils). The Museo de Sant Antoni i el Dimoni offers a year-round glimpse into this spectacular celebration, preserving the costumes, props, and history that make it one of Mallorca’s most beloved traditions.

A Colourful Collection of Culture

Inside this small but vibrant museum, you’ll find hand-painted masks, traditional demon costumes, photographs from decades of festivities, and musical instruments that set the rhythm for the dances. The displays reveal how the festival blends religious devotion to Saint Anthony Abbot, protector of animals, with playful local folklore – a balance of sacred and mischievous that defines Sa Pobla’s identity.

Stepping Into the Spirit of Sant Antoni

Even if you can’t visit during the festival itself, the museum captures its atmosphere. Visitors can see the intricate craftsmanship behind the devil masks, the vivid colours of parade banners, and even some of the giant effigies used in past celebrations. Audio-visual displays add to the immersive feel, bringing the sound of drums, chants, and firecrackers into the space.

Visiting the Museum

The museum sits just beside the Parish Church of Sant Antoni Abat, making it easy to combine both in one stop. Opening hours are limited, so it’s best to check with Sa Pobla’s tourist office or plan your visit during a local event. For a truly unforgettable experience, time your trip for mid-January and see the festival in full swing.
