Museu Arqueològic de Son Fornés (Molí d’en Fraret)
Housed inside the beautifully restored Molí d’en Fraret, an 18th-century flour mill, the Museu Arqueològic de Son Fornés is the cultural heart of Montuïri. It brings the island’s prehistoric past vividly to life with artefacts and reconstructions from the nearby Talayotic settlement of Son Fornés.
From Flour Mill to Archaeology Museum
The windmill was once a vital part of Montuïri’s agricultural life, grinding grain for the local community. In the 1980s, it was repurposed as a museum, preserving its original architecture — thick stone walls, conical tower, and milling mechanisms — while transforming the interior into modern exhibition spaces.
Tracing 3,000 Years of History
The museum’s permanent collection spans from the Bronze Age through to the Roman and Islamic periods. Highlights include:
-
Talayotic stone tools, pottery, and jewellery recovered from Son Fornés
-
A scale model of the settlement showing its monumental stone towers (talaiots)
-
Displays on daily life, agriculture, and trade in prehistoric Mallorca
Clear signage in multiple languages, along with interactive displays, make it an engaging visit for all ages.
Linked to the Archaeological Site
The museum acts as the interpretive centre for the Yacimiento de Son Fornés, located just 2.5 km away. Many visitors choose to start here to understand the history before heading out to walk among the ruins.
