Museu de Ciències Naturals de Costitx

One of Mallorca’s Best-Kept Scientific Secrets

Hidden in the centre of Costitx, the Museu de Ciències Naturals houses one of the Balearic Islands’ most significant collections of preserved flora and fauna. Located on the first floor of the Casa de Cultura, this charming museum covers around 500 m² and offers a fascinating route through Iberian-Balearic biodiversity, exotic species, and reconstructed natural habitats. It's a true hidden gem for curious visitors of all ages.

From Private Passion to Public Education

The museum was founded by Francisco Ruíz Bort, a Barcelona-born naturalist who began the collection in the 1980s. Construction started in 1985, and the museum officially opened its doors in 1987. Thanks to its dedicated space, the collection expanded to include full departments of Geology and Palaeontology, making it a key reference point for natural sciences on the island.

What You’ll Discover

Exhibits are organised along narrow passageways lined with display cabinets, each showcasing preserved species alongside reconstructions of their wild habitats. From native birds and reptiles to exotic invertebrates, marine life, fungi, and fossils, the museum’s collection spans both local and global biodiversity. Displays are engaging and educational, with new additions made as recently as 2024, when the museum reopened under the theme Expo Biodiversitat.

Though open to the public only on select days, guided tours can be arranged year-round by appointment, making it a great option for school visits, family outings, or nature lovers looking for a more intimate experience.
