Museu dels Molins – The Windmill Museum at Molí d’en Garleta
The Museu dels Molins in Palma is dedicated to preserving the heritage of Mallorca’s windmills, housed within the historic Molí d’en Garleta — one of the island’s best-preserved 19th-century flour mills. This stone tower mill, with its distinctive sails, has become a landmark in the Santa Catalina district and offers visitors a fascinating insight into the island’s agricultural past.
History of Molí d’en Garleta
Built in the late 1800s, Molí d’en Garleta once served as a working grain mill, grinding flour for the local community. Over time, many of Palma’s mills disappeared, but this one survived and was restored to house the Museu dels Molins. Today, it stands as both a piece of industrial archaeology and a cultural museum.
Exhibits & Visitor Experience
Inside, the museum showcases original milling machinery, large wooden gears, and millstones, alongside scale models of different windmill types found across the Balearic Islands. Informative displays explain the mechanics of milling, the evolution of windmill design, and the vital role these structures played in Mallorca’s rural economy.
Location & Atmosphere
Situated in the vibrant Santa Catalina neighbourhood — once dotted with mills — the museum is an easy walk from Palma’s city centre. Its restored sails provide a striking photo opportunity, and the intimate scale makes it a quick but memorable cultural stop.
