Palau de l'Almudaina

Standing directly beside La Seu, the Palau de l’Almudaina is a majestic royal palace that reflects the layered history of Palma — from Islamic rule to Christian reconquest. With its blend of Moorish foundations, Gothic architecture, and modern royal use, the palace is one of the city’s most fascinating visitable monuments.

Royal Residence with Islamic Origins

Originally an Islamic alcázar dating back to the 10th century, the palace was converted and expanded after King Jaume I’s conquest in 1229. Much of the original Islamic structure was preserved, and the result is a remarkable fusion of styles: horseshoe arches, ribbed Gothic vaults, and grand ceremonial halls.

Today, Palau de l’Almudaina is one of the official residences of the Spanish royal family — used for state functions during their visits to Mallorca — though most areas are open to the public.

Interior Highlights

Visitors can explore the King’s and Queen’s chambers, richly decorated with medieval furniture, Flemish tapestries, and religious artworks. The Chapel of Santa Anna, with its Romanesque portal and carved stone details, adds to the building’s spiritual and artistic appeal.

From the upper terraces and windows, you’ll find sweeping views over the Parc de la Mar, Palma’s old walls, and the marina — making it as photogenic as it is historic.

A Journey Through Centuries

Walking through the Almudaina Palace is like stepping through layers of Mallorcan history — from Muslim rulers and Christian kings to modern constitutional monarchy. Audio guides are available, and the palace also hosts temporary exhibitions tied to Spanish heritage and art.
