Església Parroquial de la Transfiguració del Senyor – Neo‑Gothic Majesty in Artà

Set dramatically on the slope of Sant Salvador Hill, the Església Parroquial de la Transfiguració del Senyor (Parish Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord) is one of Artà’s most iconic landmarks. Its grand Neo-Gothic profile and elevated position make it an essential stop for visitors seeking both architectural beauty and sweeping views across the town and surrounding landscape.

A Monumental Blend of Eras

Construction of the church began in 1573, replacing an earlier 13th-century chapel. Over the centuries, the church was developed in stages: the chevet was completed in the 17th century and vaulted in the 1800s, while the elegant bell tower and ornate rose window were added later, showcasing the evolving styles of Mallorcan religious architecture. Its façade, often referred to as the “Portal de ses Dones,” features pointed arches and detailed stonework typical of late Gothic revival.

Chapels, Art & Sacred Relics

Inside, the church houses fourteen chapels along the nave, including the richly decorated Chapel of the Rosary. The central altar is dominated by a striking altarpiece of the Transfiguration, installed in 1906, and the space is illuminated by intricate stained-glass windows. Visitors will also find a 17th-century baptismal font, an imposing pipe organ, and a small adjoining museum displaying religious artifacts, including relics, vestments, and a medieval fragment of the True Cross.

A View Worth the Climb

Reaching the church via the 180 stone steps or the scenic hillside road rewards visitors with panoramic views over Artà and the rolling Llevant countryside. Whether admired for its historic importance or simply as a peaceful place to pause, the church offers a powerful sense of Mallorca’s spiritual and cultural past.
