The beating spiritual and architectural heart of Manacor, the Parroquia de la Mare de Déu dels Dolors (Our Lady of Sorrows Church) is a striking neo-Gothic masterpiece and the town’s most iconic landmark. Known locally as l’Església Gran (the Great Church), its bell tower dominates the skyline and offers visitors a profound sense of history and craftsmanship.

A Monumental Symbol of Faith

Built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the church stands on the site of earlier religious buildings, including a former mosque and medieval chapel. Its defining feature is the soaring Torre Rubí, a 75-metre-high bell tower completed in 1927 under the guidance of architect Gaspar Bennàssar. The facade features pointed arches, flying buttresses, and richly carved portals, all reflecting the grandeur of neo-Gothic Mallorcan style.

Inside, the church boasts a Latin-cross layout, multiple side chapels, colourful stained-glass windows, and detailed altarpieces honouring various saints. Its blend of solemnity and beauty makes it a popular site for worship, weddings, and religious festivals.

A Living Place of Worship

This is not just a historical building—it remains an active parish church, with daily masses and strong community involvement. Locals gather here for religious observances, concerts, and processions, particularly during Holy Week and the town’s Festa Major in late August. Whether you attend a service or simply admire the architecture, the experience is intimate and culturally rich.

Outside, the surrounding Plaça Rector Rubí and neighbouring streets offer a pleasant area for walking, with cafés and traditional buildings that give context to the church’s prominence.
