Plaça Major

At the very heart of Palma’s Old Town, the Plaça Major is the city’s main square and a lively meeting point surrounded by colourful buildings, arcaded walkways, and an ever-changing mix of cafés, shops, and street performers. Whether you’re stopping for a coffee, browsing the stalls of a craft market, or simply people-watching, this bustling plaza is a true focal point of local life.

A Square with History

The site of Plaça Major has been a centre of activity for centuries. Once home to the Convent of San Felipe Neri and later the Inquisition headquarters, it was redeveloped in the 19th century into the open, symmetrical square we see today. Its uniform yellow façades and green shutters give it a distinctly Mediterranean charm, while the surrounding arcades offer shade and shelter.

Cafés, Markets & Street Performers

During the day, the square hums with activity. Outdoor café terraces spill into the centre, serving everything from café amb llet to tapas and ice cream. Regular markets are held here — especially in summer and at Christmas — selling handmade crafts, local art, and gourmet products.

Street musicians and performers add to the lively atmosphere, making it a favourite spot for both tourists and locals to pause and soak up the city’s energy.

The Gateway to the Old Town

From Plaça Major, narrow streets radiate into the heart of Palma’s historic quarter, leading to sights such as La Rambla, Mercat de l’Olivar, and Santa Eulàlia. Its central location makes it an ideal meeting place and a natural starting point for exploring on foot.
