Wild Coastal Setting & Rugged Beauty
Platja de Son Bunyola sits along a wild, nearly virgin stretch of coastline in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, shaped by the waters of the Torrent de Son Bunyola, which flows into the sea here. The beach’s appearance shifts depending on sea currents and torrent flow, with a mix of multi-coloured pebbles, gravel, and reddish mud, creating a striking contrast against the dramatic cliffs that frame the cove.
A thick pine forest borders the coastline, while a few scattered escars (traditional Balearic dry docks) reflect the area’s former use by local fishermen. Historically, this remote cove also served as a discreet landing spot for smugglers.
Geological Interest
The surrounding cliffs feature dinosaur footprints and ancient rock formations, making this area not only scenic but also geologically significant for visitors interested in Mallorca’s prehistoric history.
Boating & Anchoring
Anchoring directly in front of Platja de Son Bunyola is not safe, due to exposure to northern winds and heavy swell. Navigators are advised to seek safer anchorage nearby at Port des Canonge, though caution is still required. The nearest port facilities are at Port de Sóller, approximately 9.2 nautical miles away.
Access & Popularity
Access is relatively easy by car following signs to Port des Canonge, where visitors must park and then walk approximately 300 metres to reach the beach. A coastal trail also connects the area to Banyalbufar. Despite its scenic beauty and easy access, Platja de Son Bunyola remains very quiet, attracting primarily locals and hikers in search of a remote, natural setting away from the crowds.
