Plaza de Toros – La Monumental

Just outside Muro’s historic centre stands the striking Plaza de Toros – La Monumental, a traditional bullring that reflects an important chapter in Mallorca’s cultural and architectural history. Though no longer used for bullfighting, the site remains an emblem of regional heritage and a bold visual landmark.

Andalusian Style in the Heart of Mallorca

Built in 1910, Muro’s bullring is one of the oldest in Mallorca and is notable for its Andalusian-style entrance, whitewashed exterior, and semi-circular seating arrangement. The arena itself is framed by tall palm trees and rustic stone walls, creating a dramatic silhouette against the countryside backdrop. Its name, “La Monumental,” speaks to its once grand ambitions.

From Spectacle to Cultural Symbol

While bullfighting events were once regularly held here, the practice has long since declined. Today, the bullring is used only occasionally for cultural events or guided visits. Even so, it draws attention for its architectural character, its role in the island’s past, and the way it stirs conversation about changing traditions.

Quiet Yet Powerful

The arena is usually closed to the public, but its exterior is freely visible from the road and offers excellent photo opportunities. Whether you view it as a monument to history, or a relic of a controversial tradition, Plaza de Toros – La Monumental is undeniably part of Muro’s cultural story.
