Secluded Setting in a Protected Natural Reserve
Portals Vells I, also known as Sa Caleta des Portals Vells, lies within the sheltered Cala Portals Vells inlet, which also includes Sa Platgeta, Platja del Mago, and Platja del Rei. The beach is surrounded by a dense pine forest extending from Cap de Cala Figuera to Refaubetx, part of the Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès and the EU-designated Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA).
The small cove offers a peaceful atmosphere, enhanced by its natural surroundings and scenic setting, away from the busier resort beaches nearby.
Boating & Anchoring
Anchoring is excellent in this sheltered inlet, with a sandy seabed mixed with seaweed and a depth of approximately 5 metres. The beach is well-protected from the east and southeast winds, making it ideal for both anchoring and diving. The nearby Club Nàutic Portals Vells offers additional boating facilities.
Historical Interest – Cova de la Mare de Déu
A short walk from the beach leads to the Cova de la Mare de Déu, a historic sandstone quarry where stone was extracted in the 14th and 15th centuries for the construction of Palma Cathedral and the Santa Eulàlia church. This adds a cultural and historical element to the natural beauty of the area.
Access & Popularity
Access is easy by car, with clear signposting leading to the parking area behind Sa Platgeta, from where a short 200-metre walk brings you to Sa Caleta. The beach tends to be less crowded than many nearby resorts, making it ideal for visitors seeking a quieter, more natural beach experience within Mallorca’s protected coastal environment.
