Dramatic Coastal Setting & Geological History
Punta de sa Galera lies within the protected Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès Serra de Tramuntana, beneath the peaks of Coll de sa Bastida and Puig de ses Planes (339 metres high). This section of coastline, running between Punta de es Cavall Bernat and Port de Banyalbufar, is characterised by towering cliffs over 300 metres high, forming one of Mallorca’s most rugged and steep coastlines, filled with reefs, boulders, and large pebbles.
Geologically, this area holds some of the oldest landmass in the Balearics, dating back to the Paleozoic and Triassic periods—around 300 million years old. Its grey slate-like rocks (Paleozoic) and reddish Triassic layers reflect the dramatic shifts of the Earth's crust as Pangea formed and later broke apart, creating today’s continents.
Boating & Anchoring
Punta de sa Galera offers good anchoring conditions, being one of the safest and most sheltered points along this stretch of coastline. Its protection from prevailing winds makes it a popular spot for small boats seeking refuge along the otherwise exposed Tramuntana coast. The nearest full port facilities are at Port de Sóller.
Access & Popularity
Access is possible on foot from Banyalbufar, with no direct road access to the beach itself. Despite its proximity to the village, Punta de sa Galera remains lightly developed, drawing mainly tourists and hikers who appreciate its spectacular geological scenery and peaceful atmosphere.
