Sa Calobra & Torrent de Pareis

A legendary landscape of twisting roads, vertical cliffs, and an awe-inspiring gorge that meets the sea — Sa Calobra and the Torrent de Pareis are among Mallorca’s most iconic natural wonders.

The Setting: Cliffs, Coves & Coastal Drama

Located on Escorca’s rugged northwest coast, Sa Calobra is a tiny settlement nestled at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. The name refers to both the remote cove and the extraordinary access road built in 1933 by engineer Antonio Parietti — a spectacular feat that spirals down the cliffs in sharp bends and a dramatic 270° loop called the Nus de sa Corbata (Tie Knot). At the base, a narrow promenade leads through sea tunnels carved into the cliffs to reveal Torrent de Pareis, a stunning river canyon that empties into a pebbled cove framed by towering rock walls.

A Natural Monument of National Importance

Torrent de Pareis is more than just a pretty gorge — it’s a declared Natural Monument thanks to its unique geology and biodiversity. Stretching around 3 km inland, the canyon is formed by the convergence of two torrents, and is flanked by limestone walls over 200 metres high. In spring, rare plants flourish, and in early summer, you may hear the echoing voices of the Cor de Torrent de Pareis, a renowned open-air choral concert held in the natural amphitheatre. This UNESCO-protected part of the Tramuntana range is a magnet for hikers, photographers, and those seeking a taste of Mallorca’s wild heart.

Access & Visitor Experience

Most visitors reach Sa Calobra via the winding Ma-2141 road from Lluc or Sóller — an unforgettable drive for confident drivers. Alternatively, boat trips from Port de Sóller offer a gentler, scenic approach along the cliffs. At Sa Calobra, you’ll find a small selection of cafés, kiosks, and toilets near the parking area. From there, it’s a short, scenic walk to the cove and gorge entrance. The beach itself is pebbly but beautiful, perfect for swimming in calm weather. For adventurous hikers, the full descent through the gorge from Escorca’s Lluc area takes 4–6 hours and should only be attempted in summer, with good fitness and dry conditions.
