Sa Comuna Forest & Penyal d’Honor – Nature, Tradition, and a Panoramic Summit
One of Bunyola’s greatest treasures lies just beyond its northern edge — the sprawling Sa Comuna Forest, a public woodland area offering scenic walks, cultural heritage, and one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the region: the summit of Penyal d’Honor. For visitors who love the outdoors, this is a chance to experience the untamed beauty of the Serra de Tramuntana without straying too far from town.
Ancient Woodlands and Cultural Landscape
Sa Comuna covers over 800 hectares of pine and holm oak forest, historically used by the people of Bunyola for hunting, gathering firewood, and charcoal making. It’s common to spot remnants of old lime kilns, dry-stone terraces, and traditional ovens hidden among the trees — a reminder of the forest’s longstanding role in local life. The terrain ranges from gently sloping paths to rocky outcrops and steep ascents.
Hiking to Penyal d’Honor
The trail to Penyal d’Honor (Puig d’Honor) is the most popular route in Sa Comuna, taking roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Bunyola’s outskirts. The climb is moderate, but rewarding: from the 808-metre summit, hikers enjoy panoramic views stretching across the Sóller valley, Palma Bay, and much of central Mallorca. It's particularly stunning at sunrise or late afternoon when the light casts golden hues over the landscape.
The hike is suitable for intermediate walkers, with well-maintained paths, some rocky sections, and shaded stretches that are ideal in summer months. Bring water and good footwear, as there are no facilities along the route.
A Peaceful Natural Retreat
Whether you're looking for an active half-day hike, a family-friendly forest picnic, or a quiet stroll among old trees and stone relics, Sa Comuna offers a natural escape close to town. It’s popular with locals year-round but remains quiet and uncrowded, even during peak seasons.
