Santa Maria de Costitx

17th-Century Baroque Parish Church in the Heart of Costitx

A Spiritual Landmark at the Heart of the Village

Dominating the main square of Costitx, the Parish Church of Our Lady of Birth stands as the focal point of local faith and community. This elegant, 17th-century Baroque church replaced an earlier Gothic chapel and reflects Mallorca’s architectural evolution from medieval austerity to baroque splendor.

A Glimpse into History and Devotion

Construction began in 1676, extending into the early 18th century, resulting in a striking façade crowned with a triangular pediment and a rose window. Flanked by a sculpted statue of the Virgin Mary, the entrance leads into a vaulted nave supported by rounded arches. The church’s octagonal bell tower is a familiar landmark, visible across the plains on clear days.

Inside, its baroque altarpieces, chapels dedicated to local saints, and depictions of the Virgin of Costitx evoke centuries of devotion. The rectory behind the church houses a small collection of Baroque paintings of the Virgin Mary, adding to its cultural and spiritual importance.

Still a Heart of Community Life

The church remains active year-round, hosting weekly masses and ceremonial events, including floral displays and processions during local celebrations. It’s also a welcoming spot for quiet reflection, with a serene atmosphere and architectural charm.
