Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Bonany

Perched atop a peaceful hill just outside Petra, the Santuari de Bonany is one of the most beloved religious landmarks in inland Mallorca. This beautiful hilltop sanctuary offers both a spiritual retreat and one of the most breathtaking panoramic views over the Pla de Mallorca. It’s a cherished site for pilgrims and a deeply rewarding destination for travellers seeking natural beauty and cultural depth.

History and Religious Importance

The name “Bonany” means “Good Year”, referring to a miracle in 1609 when prayers to the Virgin Mary were believed to have brought an end to a devastating drought. A small chapel was built in her honour, later replaced by the larger sanctuary that exists today, completed in the early 20th century. The sanctuary remains a place of devotion and local pride, and it’s believed that Fray Juníper Serra prayed here before setting off for the Americas.

Architecture and Setting

The sanctuary is modest but elegant, with a cream-coloured façade, arched entrance, and peaceful courtyard lined with cypress trees. Inside, visitors will find a small chapel to the Virgin of Bonany, glowing with soft candlelight and floral offerings. From the stone terrace outside, there are sweeping views across Petra’s rooftops and the surrounding countryside — a perfect photo opportunity, especially at sunset.

Visiting Experience

Whether you arrive by car or take the winding hiking route through pine woods and almond groves, the Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Bonany offers a peaceful escape from the busier corners of Mallorca. Entry is free and the site is open during daylight hours. It’s an ideal stop for those interested in Mallorcan heritage, religious tourism, or simply enjoying a tranquil moment in nature.
