Santuari de Lluc (Monastery of Lluc)

Set in a serene mountain valley surrounded by pine forests and peaks, the Santuari de Lluc is Mallorca’s spiritual heart — a centuries-old monastery, cultural centre, and popular pilgrimage site nestled deep in Escorca.

Mallorca’s Sacred Sanctuary

Founded in the 13th century, the Sanctuary of Lluc (pronounced “yook”) has long been the island’s most important religious site. According to tradition, a Moorish shepherd boy named Lluc discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary near this spot, prompting the construction of a chapel. Over the centuries, the sanctuary expanded into a full monastery, attracting pilgrims from across Mallorca and beyond. Today, it houses a revered Black Madonna statue in the basilica, a place of deep devotion for locals. The surrounding monastery buildings, gardens, and arcaded courtyards invite quiet reflection.

More Than a Monastery

Lluc is not only a place of worship, but also a cultural hub. It is home to the famous Escolania dels Blauets, a children’s choir that performs regularly in the basilica — a hauntingly beautiful experience. Visitors can also explore a museum, walk through botanical gardens, or follow the camí dels misteris — a woodland path lined with religious sculptures. The monastery also has a guesthouse, allowing visitors to stay overnight and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere under the stars. A few cafés and shops on site provide refreshments and souvenirs, and the surrounding trails offer stunning mountain hikes.

Getting There & Visitor Info

The sanctuary lies at the end of a winding road off the Ma-10, about 30 minutes from Pollença or Inca. It’s accessible by car, bike, or organised tour. Public buses also stop at Lluc during the main season. Entry to the complex is free, though the museum and gardens require a small fee. For many visitors, a visit to Lluc offers a peaceful contrast to Mallorca’s beaches — a chance to experience the island’s spiritual and natural heritage in one remarkable location.
