Teatre Principal de Palma

Standing proudly at the head of La Rambla, the Teatre Principal de Palma is one of Mallorca’s most important cultural institutions and a hub for theatre, opera, dance, and music. With its elegant façade, rich history, and varied programme, it’s a must-visit for culture lovers seeking a taste of the island’s performing arts scene.

A Stage with History

The theatre’s origins date back to 1667, when it was established as the “Casa de les Comèdies.” Over the centuries, it has undergone several reconstructions — the current Neoclassical façade and interior date from a major rebuild in 1857, designed to accommodate the growing demand for theatre in Palma. Today, it blends traditional charm with modern technical facilities.

Performances for All Tastes

Teatre Principal hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year, including opera, ballet, classical concerts, contemporary theatre, children’s shows, and performances in Catalan, Spanish, and international languages. It is also a key venue for festivals such as the Mallorca Jazz Festival and the Festival de Música de Pollença.

Inside, the theatre features a horseshoe-shaped auditorium with red velvet seating, gilded balconies, and excellent acoustics — making any performance a memorable experience.

More Than a Performance Venue

Guided tours are sometimes offered, allowing visitors to explore the backstage areas, dressing rooms, and historical archives. The theatre’s location also makes it easy to combine an evening show with dinner or drinks along La Rambla or nearby Passeig del Born.
