Torre de Cala en Basset – A Watchtower with a View and a Story

Perched on a rocky bluff above the western Mallorcan coastline, the Torre de Cala en Basset is a 16th-century defensive watchtower that once formed part of the island’s coastal warning system against pirate raids. Today, it’s a destination for adventurous walkers and lovers of dramatic sea views — offering a striking blend of natural beauty, history, and solitude, just a short hike from the village of Sant Elm.

A Historic Sentinel Overlooking the Sea

Built in 1583, the tower was part of a vast network of lookout points across Mallorca’s coast. Soldiers stationed here would light fires to signal approaching ships, alerting the nearby towns of Andratx and beyond. The structure remains largely intact — a cylindrical stone tower with a flat roof that provides sweeping views over the coast and across to Sa Dragonera.

Climb the sturdy stone steps to the roof, and you’re rewarded with a 360° panorama of pine-clad hills, blue sea, and craggy cliffs — a spot that feels like a natural lookout and a historic time capsule all at once.

Getting There: A Scenic Hike from Sant Elm

The walk to Torre de Cala en Basset begins from the coastal village of Sant Elm, following a signposted path through forest and rocky outcrops. The route takes around 45–60 minutes each way, depending on pace and fitness. While not overly difficult, the terrain is uneven in places, so good walking shoes and water are essential.

Along the way, you’ll pass through Cala en Basset, a rugged, stony cove that’s also great for a secluded swim or picnic. The path continues uphill to the tower, where the landscape opens up dramatically.

Wildlife, Solitude & Coastal Drama

This part of the coast is relatively untouched, making the route ideal for those looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in Mallorca’s wilder side. Expect the sound of cicadas, distant sea birds, and not much else — apart from the wind and the view. The location is also a popular stop for photographers and nature lovers looking to catch golden hour or stormy skies over the cliffs.

For Hikers, Historians & View-Chasers

If you’re looking for an experience that combines mild adventure, rich history, and unforgettable scenery, the Torre de Cala en Basset is a perfect choice. It's a short but rewarding outing that gives you a real sense of Mallorca’s defensive past and raw natural charm — and it's close enough to Sant Elm that you can follow it up with a well-earned drink by the sea.
