Torre de S’Estalella (Tower of S’Estalella)
Standing sentinel over the rocky coastline near S’Estanyol, the Torre de S’Estalella is a restored 16th-century watchtower offering stunning sea views and a glimpse into Mallorca’s maritime defence history. Remote yet rewarding, it makes for an atmospheric coastal walk just south of Llucmajor.
A Coastal Guardian from the 1500s
Built around 1577, this cylindrical stone tower was one of many lookout posts erected around Mallorca to guard against pirate raids during the Ottoman era. Positioned strategically on a headland at the tip of Cala Pi bay, the Torre de S’Estalella allowed watchmen to signal inland towns at the first sign of danger, using fire or smoke. Though abandoned for centuries, the tower was carefully restored in the late 20th century and remains a well-preserved example of the island’s coastal fortification network.
Scenic Walks & Wildlife
Reaching the tower involves a 20–30-minute walk from the small fishing village of S’Estanyol de Migjorn. The coastal path is scenic and gentle, weaving past traditional stone fishermen’s huts, sea cliffs, and coastal scrubland frequented by seabirds and lizards. At the tower itself, the views stretch out toward the Mediterranean and across the marine reserve of Cap Blanc, offering photo-worthy panoramas in every direction.
This stretch of coast is peaceful and undeveloped, ideal for those who enjoy quiet walks, natural landscapes, and cultural heritage all in one.
Experience & Practical Info
There are no facilities at the tower, so bring water and wear good footwear. While the structure itself is not open to enter, its base is accessible and the area is unfenced, making it a perfect spot for a picnic, painting session, or quiet contemplation with the sea breeze in your hair.
