Yacimiento de Son Fornés

Just outside Montuïri lies the Yacimiento de Son Fornés, one of Mallorca’s most important Talayotic archaeological sites. Dating back more than 3,000 years, this Bronze Age settlement offers an extraordinary opportunity to walk among the island’s prehistoric stone architecture.

A Glimpse into Prehistoric Mallorca

The site was inhabited from around 900 BC to 100 BC, evolving from a Talayotic village into a community that saw Roman and even early Islamic influences. Excavations have revealed the foundations of three monumental talaiots — circular or square stone towers — along with surrounding houses, storage areas, and meeting spaces.

The size of the structures and the quality of the stonework give a powerful sense of the engineering skills and social organisation of the Talayotic people.

Exploring the Ruins

The site is open-air and unfenced, allowing visitors to explore freely along marked pathways. Information panels (in multiple languages) explain the function of different structures and how the settlement changed over time. The elevated location offers views over the surrounding countryside, much as it would have appeared to its ancient inhabitants.

For the full story behind the artefacts and history, most visitors start at the Museu Arqueològic de Son Fornés in Montuïri before coming here.
